MANILA: The number of loose firearms has been reduced by about 50 percent following the election gun ban and Oplan Katok of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Records from the PNP-Firearms and Explosives Office showed some 245,000 gun holders have complied with regulations to renew their expired licences. Of the 613,657 gun holders with expired licences,

some 245,000 have renewed their registration as of the first week of June. Some 1.6 million firearms are registered nationwide.

PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr said police will continue to implement Oplan Katok.

Embassy seeks OFW passports

MANILA: Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Saudi Arabia should submit their passports to the Philippine embassy so that their work status can be corrected before the deadline set by the Saudi government, Vice President Jejomar Binay said yesterday.

Binay, presidential adviser on OFW concerns, said the Philippine embassy in Saudi Arabia informed him that 10,461 OFWs in Riyadh and Jeddah have yet to surrender their passports for correction as of June 8.

“Our OFWs need to submit their passports immediately so our embassy could update their work status or process their papers for repatriation,” he said.

“They should grab this opportunity if they want to continue working there or come home to the Philippines,” Binay added.
