DOHA: Only 150 people among those who registered for the ‘Be Fit’ competition during the National Sport Day celebrations are continuing with the contest, which will give away huge cash prizes for the winners.

A total of 775 people registered for the competition which was a new attraction of Sport Day 2013 celebrations in February.

However, people who are still continuing with the competition have successfully started to lose weight, according to experts.

The participants with a body mass index (BMI) at or above 30 have to work out for one year continuously to maintain a healthy weight as per regulations of the competition.

They should undergo a lifestyle improvement through dietary modification and physical activities. No invasive method to reduce weight is permitted.

The challenge is set to encourage overweight people to lose weight and adopt a better lifestyle, with winners being selected on the basis of criteria such as weight losing ratio, percentage of fat loss and overall fitness and shape.

The competition is organised by the Qatar Olympic Committee, in collaboration with VLCC Slimming Beauty and Fitness Centre.

“Over 770 people registered for the competition at two booths we had for four days. However, only 150 are now left with the competition,” said Amanda Yaacoub, Area Technical Head, Slimming at VLCC Slimming Beauty and Fitness Centre.

“People didn’t continue for different reasons like some only registered and some have left the country,” she added.

VLCC and Qatar Olympic Committee will choose the winners on the basis of scientific parameters of healthy weight loss.

VLCC helps in weight loss without resorting to crash diets, medicines, hunger suppression or surgery.

Every person will be given a tailor-made programme, keeping in mind their eating habits and individual lifestyle. “We follow up with the contestants and some of them are very keen and loosing weight at a good level,” said Yaacoub.

On the 2014 National Sport Day, the winner will be awarded a prize of QR100,000. The runner-up will receive QR30,000 and the third spot winner will get QR20,000.   The fourth prize will be QR15,000 and each of the next 20 winners will get QR5,000.
