President of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani yesterday welcomed the delegations participating in the General Assembly of the Association of the National Olympic Committees (ANOC), which began yesterday at Sheraton Doha.

In his opening remarks, Sheikh Joaan said that 'QOC was honoured to provide support to ANOC in hosting the General Assembly this year, which is important for the Olympic movement globally'.
He said that the QOC was keen on spreading the Olympic spirit in every day life of citizens in Qatar, stressing that sports has become an integral part of people's lives.
The QOC President also expressed the committee's delight that 'it will partner and celebrate with national Olympic committees from around the world over the course of this week'.
Sheikh Joaan also expressed his delight at meeting representatives of different national Olympic committees from around the world in Qatar 'to work on determining mechanisms to support one another and present initiatives and contributions that could take the Olympic movement forward'.
He added that this year's General Assembly was also a good occasion to celebrate ANOC's achievements and honour the champions of the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Sheikh Joaan hoped that the participants would enjoy getting to know Qatar's unique culture during the gala. He concluded his speech by expressing hope that the General Assembly's agenda will contribute to strengthening ties between national Olympic committees and enriching the debate that wants a better future for the Olympic movement.
