LAHORE: Taking notice of media reports that some parliamentarians have not yet filed their tax returns, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has directed all party members to ensure that their tax returns are up-to-date.

If any party member has not yet filed the tax return, he/she should do it forthwith failing which the party shall take strong disciplinary action immediately, PML-N chief said in a statement yesterday.

Nawaz reiterated that no one is above the law and that filing of tax returns by all taxpayers is mandatory.

According to a study conducted by the Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI), in coordination with the Centre for Investigative Reporting Pakistan (CIRP), 67 percent of parliamentarians and 62 percent of ministers in the Federal Cabinet did not file their income tax returns.

The study, ‘Representation without Taxation’, said that 34 ministers of 54 did not file tax returns in 2011. President Asif Zardari also did not file tax returns.

According to the report, only 17 PPP senators, six PML-N senators, four MQM senators, two ANP and PML-Q each and one BNP-A, JUI-F and the PML-F each filed income tax returns in 2011.
