DOHA: The Conference on Combating the Financing of Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) will begin at Hilton Doha today.
Some 70 government officials from the GCC states, as well as Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco are expected to attend the two-day event.
The event will bring together practitioners in the field of nonproliferation export controls, financial intelligence, and customs enforcement to promote the sharing of international best practices and development of national-level mechanisms to combat proliferation financing.
The conference will discuss ways to build effective national and international capabilities to disrupt and deter financing of proliferation-related trade, propose preventive measures for financial institutions, and discuss the role of financial institutions in implementing international counter proliferation financing standards.
The speakers include proliferation financing experts from the UN1540 Committee, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Secretariat, the US Departments of State and Treasury, the Qatari Ministry of Defence, and foreign ministries of Australia and France.
The Union of Arab Banks and other global and regional financial institutions will represent the financial industry at this gathering.
This event is jointly sponsored by the Committee on Prohibition of Weapons at Qatar’s Ministry of Defence and the Export Control and Related Border Security Programme of the US Department of State.
