DOHA: Qatar University (QU) held a two-day conference to discuss new strategies to engage students in their learning.
The university’s Office of Faculty and Instructional Development (OFID) concluded its fourth annual symposium yesterday focusing on issues of active learning, technology, assessment, community service and research-based teaching and learning.
Opening the event at the university’s Ibn Khaldoon Hall, Acting Vice-President for Academic Affairs Dr Mazen Hasna encouraged the faculty members to continue motivating and engaging students. This aims to foster greater involvement in university and community life, collaboration with their peers and more commitment to their studies.
Dr Hasna said: “The university’s mission is to provide students with a quality education. Our role is to do our very best for them.”
Workshops on student writing, more inter-college collaboration and a greater use of technology have been introduced. OFID also piloted an online training programme, providing electronic, modularised workshops.
Workshops and seminars at the conference discussed best practices across the university, including teaching methods focusing on team-based learning, engaging critical reflection, role play, the role of technology in advancing learning and project-based learning.
