DOHA: Qatar Foundation’s Migrant Workers Welfare Initiative in Doha was promoted at a recent seminar for the Institution of Civil Engineers.
The event was hosted by GHD, one of the world’s leading engineering, architecture and environmental consulting companies.
The initiative sets minimum, mandatory requirements for recruitment, employment, accommodation, transport, working conditions and general treatment of workers engaged in QF’s capital and facilities management projects.
It is an important step forward for migrant workers’ rights.
“Adherence to new requirements is key to QF’s selection and retention of contractors and sub-contractors,” Chris Newman, QF’s Welfare Manager said at the event.
Workers’ welfare standards are included in all new QF tenders.
Newman said the initiative is on-going and will be reviewed frequently to ensure its effectiveness.
Around 50 people from client, consultant and contractor companies attended the seminar.
Cameron Gillanders, GHD’s Qatar Manager, said, “We are proud to host this seminar as part of our long-standing partnership with the Institution of Civil Engineers in Qatar.
“Welfare of migrant workers is an important health and safety issue for the construction industry and it is pleasing to see major organisations like QF has set new benchmarks for Qatar.”
