DOHA: A total of 7,442 Qatari voters have registered for the forthcoming Central Municipal Council (CMC) elections until Wednesday, a local Arabic daily reported. Voters registration started last Sunday at 23 constituencies across the country.
Turnout of women voters is steadily on the rise, with a total of 3,294 women registering on the first four days. The remaining 4,148 registered voters were men.
The authorities have made special arrangements for the elderly and people with disabilities who have difficulties in completing the registration procedures. They only need to sit in their cars and the registration center staff will go to them and get the procedures done in few minutes, the daily said, quoting Mohammed Yunus Jusaiman, head of the Supervisory Committee for the elections.
The official said many voters had come with the IDs of their wives and old members in the family to register on behalf of them. However, they have not been allowed to register. “People are cooperative when we explained the rules and procedures to them,” he said.
The eligible voters can register on line through Metrash 2 or must come in person to the registration centers in their respective constituency. Registration is open from 4pm to 7pm daily and will close on January 22.
