Beijing: China cleared out illegal occupants from 27,000 military apartments over a seven-month period last year as part of a wider anti-corruption drive, according to a report.
The People’s Liberation Army also reduced the number of military vehicles by 29,000 between June and December, the PLA Daily reported yesterday. No comparative figures were given.
The newspaper made no mention of any punishment for officers who abused their power and illegally occupied military homes or handed out military license plates to close friends as favours.
Tokyo official to visit Seoul
Tokyo: Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau at Japan’s Foreign Ministry Junichi Ihara will pay an official visit to South Korea next Tuesday.
The senior Japanese official will hold talks with Director-General of the Northeast Asian Affairs Bureau at South Korea’s Foreign Ministry Lee Sang-deok on issues of mutual concern, including bilateral ties and the North Korea situation.

Manama: The Bahraini student, who was kidnapped in Malaysia for around two weeks, was released in coordination with Malaysian security authorities, Bahrain’s Interior Ministry announced.
The ministry said that the Bahraini police team in charge of following up on efforts to release the student, Ali Ahmed Al Nashaba, had contacted the Malaysian police about the search and investigation procedures, which resulted in locating the detention site and release of the student on Friday, the official Bahrain News Agency (BNA) reported.
