DOHA: A man, claiming to have become impotent due to alleged negligence of a doctor during surgical operations, has demanded QR10m in damages in a lawsuit.
The man has actually gone in appeal against the ruling of a lower criminal court that sentenced the doctor to a month in jail and fine of QR460,000 ($126,000). And the court ruled that the sentence be kept in suspension. This means that the doctor is to be jailed only if he repeats medical negligence within a specified timeframe.
The lawyer for the complainant has told the Criminal Court of Appeals in his plea that the doctor has walked away with light punishment for what was a serious negligence.
Medical reports suggest that the complainant has suffered multiple disabilities during a slew of surgical interventions for piles, reports local Arabic daily Al Raya.
The doctor is a consultant surgeon at Al Khor Hospital, the daily said.
In March 2009, the complainant was brought to the hospital. He was shivering as he was had high fever and pain due to piles.
The daily said he needed immediate surgical intervention but the doctor, now the accused in the case, waited for six long days to perform the operation. The complainant’s condition worsened and the bacteria spread, as a result of which he needed several operations.
One of a string of operations performed on him was for bowel diversion to let him pass stool.
In other surgical interventions, his right testicle was removed and the left one was re-positioned. The daily said this way his sex life was severely affected.
