Doha: The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at Qatar University (QU) will host a two-day conference on March 17-18 on “Perspectives on Middle East Studies” in cooperation with Cambridge University.
The conference will bring together scholars, researchers and experts from Qatar, UK and other countries, to engage on issues relevant to the Middle East and Gulf region such as language, culture, media, women, literature, politics and others.
The event will feature presentations of research from a variety of perspectives, highlighting their breadth and scope of research, and demonstrating the dynamic nature of the Middle East region.
QU President Professor Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad and Centre of Islamic Studies Director Professor Yasir Suleiman will present the welcoming remarks. Fourteen speakers from QU, Cambridge University, Hamad bin Khalifa University, University College of London in Qatar, Northwestern University Qatar, and University of Sarajevo will participate in sessions.
“This is a wonderful example of the importance of an interdisciplinary perspective, scholarly exchange and collaboration. We look forward to more opportunities to collaborate with Cambridge University to advance this partnership,” said Misnad.
DOHA: Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar will host acclaimed Pakistani-American artist Shahzia Sikander, tomorrow. The lecture will take place at 6pm at the atrium at VCUQatar. The event is open to the public. Sikander is visiting VCUQatar to produce a series of print works as part of the Painting and Printmaking Department’s publishing program, Fanoon: Center for Printmedia Research. In her lecture, Sikander will discuss her work.
Sikander’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Park, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, San Diego Art Museum, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. Sikander has been the recipient of numerous awards, grants and fellowships, including the Inaugural Medal of Art by the US Secretary of State, Hilary Rodham Clinton (2012).
Doha: Aqua Park, Qatar’s first theme park, yesterday announced to reopen for 2014 season. Featuring 15 exhilarating water rides and attractions spread over an area of 50,000sqm, Aqua Park has something to offer guests of all age groups and swimming skills. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online to avoid queues. “Last year we welcomed 3,500 guests during the opening week,” said Mohamed Firdaus Raj, general manager, Aqua Park.
A total of 160,000 people visited Aqua Park in 2013, with more than 170,000 guests anticipated in 2014. From opening day all the park’s rides will be open to guests, including the huge play area featuring the 2,000 gallon tipping bucket and the park’s four-storey high water slides. The full-size wave pool and the guest-favorite 200-meter long lazy river will also be ready to receive guests.
