DOHA: Qatar Foundation (QF) and its Chairperson, H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, were honoured by the World Affairs Council in Washington, DC on Thursday for QF’s extraordinary worldwide contributions to the promotion of education, human development, and social and economic prosperity.
QF was recognised with the 2014 Global Education Award at the Council’s Global Education Gala, an annual forum to recognise the Council’s achievements over the previous year, and to honour individuals and organisations for their contributions to the promotion of global education and public awareness of global issues.
Dr Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, President of Hamad bin Khalifa University, and Vice-President, Education, QF, accepted the award on behalf of Sheikha Moza. The high-profile event was attended by members of Congress, senior US government officials, ambassadors, business leaders, and media representatives.
Addressing the audience, Dr Al Thani underlined Sheikha Moza’s commitment to education and to building the knowledge-based economy, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, under the leadership of H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir.
“Guided by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Qatar Foundation has since 1995 been spearheading Qatar’s transition to a knowledge-based society by fostering innovation and excellence in education, research and community development. As home to some of the world’s leading universities and researchers, we are delighted that the World Affairs Council recognises Qatar Foundation’s contribution to global human development and the acquisition of knowledge,” Dr Al Thani said.
During the ceremony, the World Affairs Council also recognized three other distinguished honorees who share a commitment to global education, including Mauro Vieira, Ambassador of Brazil to the United States, Dr John DeGioia, President of Georgetown University, and Jeff Fager, Chairman of CBS News and Executive Producer of “60 Minutes Global”.
The World Affairs Council in Washington, DC is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation dedicated to expanding awareness among the international community of geopolitical, business, and civil society issues.
The Council provides a neutral platform for forum discussions on global education and international affairs by prominent politicians, academics, journalists, and corporate and public-sector leaders.
