DOHA: Some women make their husbands spend extravagantly so they are not left with enough cash to think of a second marriage, says a local Arabic daily quoting a Qatari woman.
Women generally pester their husbands to buy them branded goods if they are themselves using luxury items.
“I sometimes do waste my husband’s money but that is unintentional,” said Mona Ali, claiming that when her husband has extra cash he spends on branded goods.
“So if he can spend on luxurious goods why I and my children should not,” Al Raya quoted Ali as saying. “He splurges cash on branded items even when he doesn’t need them.”
Ali who earlier said she makes her husband spend lavishly unintentionally added in the same breath that if her husband doesn’t have enough cash left he wouldn’t think of taking another wife.
“Therefore, I plan how to make my husband spend as he gets cash, for he may never think of picking a second wife,” Ali said.
Some women have a negative perspective about marriage and are always on the lookout for the slightest excuse to travel overseas for shopping.
This prompts their husbands to seek bank loans and splurge the cash on overseas vacationing and shopping. Many land in jail for not being able to repay the debts.
In many cases this leads to marital discords and divorces. A man said his wife was a spendthrift and wastes too much money.
“I don’t know how to convince her to economise and reduce the expenditure,” he said giving his name as Isa Nasr.
But a woman said some husbands panic looking at household provisions bought by their wives at the beginning of a month and they start criticising them for being spendthrift.
“How does a husband know what things are needed in a household?” They have no idea. We don’t buy things that are unnecessary, nevertheless we are criticised,” a woman told the daily.
