DOHA: Owners of some garages in the Industrial Area are catching stray dogs and training them to guard their premises amid a growing number of reported cases of theft of cars and spare parts.
“I could not afford a security guard for my garage due to the soaring rent of the premise and the huge expenditure needed to run it. So I have kept a dog to scare away any thieves that may come at night,” said an operator.
Customers have complained about parts missing from their vehicles after they were left at the garages for repair, the operator added.
Visitors to the Industrial Area, meanwhile, are concerned about the growing number of dogs, which they fear might bite people or cause the outbreak of an epidemic or infectious disease as most of the stray dogs have not been immunised.
The dogs are neither registered nor “expensive to keep”, which is why they have become popular with garage owners, according to Al Sharq.
Stray dogs that can be seen in the Industrial Area looking for food in garbage bins should be a matter of serious concern for the authorities, the Arabic daily said yesterday.
