Doha: The majority of residents in Qatar believe that names of streets are chosen randomly, said an online poll.
According to the poll by Al Raya newspaper, 63.9 percent of respondents believed that the names of streets were chosen randomly while 27.1 percent said streets were named after important personalities whom people did not recognise.
Nine percent of respondents said streets were named because of the non-availability of suitable names.
All respondents were of the view that streets should have names and not numbers.
Naming streets in the West is a different story, because citizens name them by numbers not by names to avoid similarity and confusion.
Around 72.1 percent of participants favoured naming main streets after famous, influential Arabic and Islamic figures, while 23.8 percent said streets should be named after national figures to recognise their sacrifice.
About 4.1 percent of respondents said streets should be named after global personalities.
The main focus and emphasis of citizens revolved around maintaining Qatari identity and heritage and honouring top figures and celebrities.
