BERLIN: Two people aboard a small plane were killed after the aircraft crashed in a residential area south of Mannheim in southwestern Germany on Saturday, local police said.

The plane crashed at around 1130 a.m. local time (0930 GMT) onto a residential property in the town of Limburgerhof, police said in a statement.

"Numerous pieces of debris are scattered across a wide area around the crash site," the statement said, adding that no injuries among local residents had been reported so far.

A large number of officers had been deployed at the scene and the cause of the crash was under investigation, police said.

Limburgerhof, in the southwestern German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, has around 11,600 residents.
