Islamabad: At least two persons were killed and five others injured during exchange of gunfire yesterday between two rival groups in session court in Lahore, the capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab.

Govt eyes more taxpayers
KARACHI: As Pakistan’s taxation authority Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) assumes the “Big Brother’s” role with new powers and access to hitherto prohibited bank accounts data of ordinary people, it has estimated that 7.5 million new taxpayers will be available for filing income returns in the next fiscal year once the amended Finance Bill 2013-14 is passed by parliament, official sources revealed here yesterday.
The amendments mean the authorities can acquire real-time data of account holders as 99 percent of all the transactions made in the country will be filtered through the FBR databank, the sources said.
The sources said the databank would only be operated by authorised FBR officials. Even Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited, the FBR subsidiary, will not have the authority to get access to this data.
3 provinces to present budgets
KARACHI: In an unusual occurrence, three out of the four provinces of Pakistan will be presenting their budgets tomorrow, offering voters the opportunity to observe the varying governing strategies of the three major political parties in the country on the same day.
The Sindh, Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa assemblies will all be meeting tomorrow for the presentation of their respective provincial budgets. The outlier is Balochistan, where the provincial budget will be presented on Thursday, June 20.
Climbers start arriving
ISLAMABAD: The climbing season has started in Pakistan, with mountaineers attempting not just the 8,000-metre-plus peaks but also those seldom climbed, to set new records.
Austrian, French, British and Italian mountaineers started arriving in the country a week ago and some of them are on their way to try new challenges in the Karakorum Range.
