Doha: A leading international school here has drawn fire from a section of parents for including liquor on the menu of a farewell event for students.

Some parents said they were shocked to get an invitation from the school that said liquor would be served at the event organised at a hotel.

Many parents boycotted the event as their demand to take alcohol off the menu was rejected by the school, which said most parents wanted drinks to be served, a local Arabic daily has reported. The school told upset parents that it will look into their request for the same event next year. The name of the school and students’ age was not mentioned in the report. The event was criticised by parents and others on local social networking sites. Many people demanded strict action against the school.

One parent said that it was not the first time that a school in Qatar allowed alcohol at an event. However, it was probably the first time that a school had openly talked about it in its invitation.
“The Supreme Education Council (SEC) needs to take strict action against the school,” said a commentator, who wondered how a school can make alcohol available at events meant for schoolchildren.
“If the law against consuming alcohol was strict, this would have never happened,” said another commentator.
Another commentator said such events will continue to surface as long as Muslim countries give alcohol licences to hotels. The Peninsula
