LA Trinidad: A former forest ranger was killed by assassins Sunday night in San Juan, Abra.
Guillermo dela Cuadra, 63, of Barangay Guimba, was playing cards with other villagers at a friend’s house in Barangay Supi-il when still unidentified men shot him with assault rifles.
The wounded Cuaded died while being transferred from the St Therese Wellness Centre to the Abra Provincial Hospital in Bangued town. Police investigators found 12 cartridges for cal 7.62mm firearm, two cartridges of cal 5.56mm, and a cal 7.62mm bullet.
Hostage taker arrested
MANILA: Police arrested a drug-crazed man after taking hostage a man inside a house in Makati City yesterday morning.
Senior Superintendent Manuel Lukban, Makati City police chief, said he received a call around 7:40am about a man who barged into a house along Durango Street that was being used as an office by the Sta Ana Builders Inc, an electrical contracting company.
Lukban said the suspect, identified as Ariel Ruelo, 31, of San Joaquin, Mandaluyong City, intended to rob the office when he was discovered by its caretaker, Jomar Villanueva.
Army deployed in rebel areas
BACOLOD CITY: The Army’s 303rd Infantry Brigade has deployed 300 of its men to help fight poverty in 11 conflict-torn communities in the northern part of Negros Occidental.
Col Jon Aying, commander of the 303rd IB based in Murcia town, said the 300 soldiers, augmented by policemen, will comprise 20 “Bayanihan” teams deployed in these hinterland barangays, as part of the military’s “Win the Peace” campaign. Agencies
