Doha: Member of the National Human Rights Committee in Qatar Mariam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah said yesterday that the Qatari day for human rights represents a turning point for advancing the culture of human rights, something already found in Arab and Islamic culture.
Al Attiyah said in a speech marking the event that the decree that established the National Human Rights Committee reflected a long-term vision of the country’s wise leadership. She added that there were many developments in human rights issues, not only in Qatar, but on a regional and international scale.
She added that each year brings new developments to issues related to human rights in the country. She highlighted the expected legislative amendments to Labour Law, announced by Foreign Minister
H E Dr Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah in May. She expressed her hope that the amendments will be finalised in the near future.
She added that the development of human rights work in Qatar was a result of the leadership’s support of the cause. She noted that human rights, particularly honouring human dignity was highlighted in Shariah long before the Western world applied it in its laws and constitutions.
Al Attiyah congratulated the Emir and the people of Qatar on the occasion. She stressed that it was the right of every human living on the land to enjoy a decent life. She added that human rights was an important priority to the government of the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and before him the governments of the Father Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
The committee celebrated the Qatari human rights day, which falls on November 11 of each year, in Katara.
