DOHA: Al Mazrouah yard in Umm Salal is expected to attract more visitors this week with several new items from local farms to be sold at low prices.
The market was opened last week for the current harvest season to help Qatari farmers sell their products directly to customers, without intervention of middlemen.
Besides fresh vegetables from local farms, fresh fish from Qatari waters, livestock and locally produced chicken, egg and honey are also being sold in the market this year, among other items.
The market will be open on three days every week- Thursday, Friday and Saturday- until the end of the harvest season.
A major attraction this week will be locally produced tomato, which was not available in sufficient quantities last week. Limited stocks from a single farm came on the last day and was sold out immediately.
With the onset of winter, more quantities are expected from various farms this week, to be sold at attractive prices.
Prices at the yard were much lower compared to other markets in the country. For instance, a box of cucumber (six to eight kilograms) was sold at QR10 last week while a small box (three to four kilograms) was available at QR5. A box of capsicum cost QR15 while green chilly (big) was sold at QR7.
Fresh fruits from a private company are also available at low prices, besides pure honey from local farms produced by the Ministry of Environment. A seven kg box of orange cost QR30 last week.
Honey is also cheaper compared to the prices in other markets in Doha. A total of 8.5 tonnes of fruits and 1.5 tonnes of fish were sold last week, according to Al Sharq.
The fish section alone attracted more than 500 visitors last week.
