ANKARA:  German tennis star Angelique Kerber on Wednesday advanced to the third round of the Australian Open by beating Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia.

The three-time Grand Slam champion easily trounced Maia, winning 6-2 and 6-3.

Kerber, 30, the world number two women’s seed, became the eighth active player to reach 100 wins in the grand slam.

In the other game of the day, world number two in the men’s category, Rafael Nadal, defeated Aussie Matthew Ebden by 6-3, 6-2, and 6-2 to proceed to the third round.

Seventeen-time Grand-Slam winner Nadal will face Australia’s Alex de Minaur, 19, in the third round.
