New Delhi: To exclude socially advanced persons/sections from reservation under the other backward classes (OBC) quota, the cabinet yesterday raised the income criterion from Rs450,000 to Rs600,000 per annum. “The increase in the income limit to exclude the ‘creamy layer’ is in keeping with the increase in the Consumer Price Index,” an official statement said.
Non-poor to still get cheap grain
New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs yesterday approved continued allocation of subsidised grain to above poverty line families during 2013-14 under the Targeted Public Distribution System. The panel approved additional allocation of 4.18 million tonnes of wheat and 1.98 million tonnes of rice at APL issue prices to states and union territories.
Thousands in tax protest
Mumbai: Thousands of traders in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, along with state politicians, courted arrest yesterday demanding scrapping of the new Local Body Tax. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai appealed to traders to call off the agitation.
