MONTREAL: Sun Media announced yesterday it is closing eight small-town newspapers across Canada and three of its free urban dailies, as it shifts to meet growing demand for online news.
The closures of the 24 Hours newspapers in Ottawa and other cities will result in 360 job losses. But it will save the company Canadian $55m annually. “The downsizing is necessary to secure our corporation’s future success in an industry that is being revolutionized by the advent of digital,” said Julie Tremblay, the media company’s chief operating officer.AFP
