TEHRAN: The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday affirmed readiness to swap prisoners with the United States.
"Iran has been pursuing the case independently from the JCPOA talks and has on different occasions hinted readiness to the US side for dealing with the issues of prisoners," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said in statements cited by state-run news agency (IRNA).
Kanaani called on the US side to remove obstacles on the way of releasing the prisoners who were arrested over violating the embargo imposed on Iran.
The statements came at a time when Iran announced progress in negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement, from which the US side unilaterally withdrew in 2018 and subsequently imposed new sanctions on Tehran.
Iran insists that the negotiation of any new agreement should include the lifting of all sanctions imposed on it by the United States.
