DOHA: Citizens and residents yesterday blasted the Traffic Department for its decision to ban parking second-hand vehicles for sale in public areas, saying they should first rid the city of abandoned vehicles which have become an eyesore for many years.
This was after the Traffic Department has announced via Twitter and Facebook that “those vehicles parked at public places with advertisement to sell them will be treated as abandoned vehicles,” adding it is a clear violation of Traffic Law No. 17 of year 2007 and would be dealt with accordingly.
Effective yesterday, the action of the Traffic Department was prompted by the growing number of these vehicles parked “in many places including petrol stations, grounds adjacent to main or subsidiary roads, at roundabout entrances.”
Although some were happy of the decision, many expressed disgust of the inaction of the Department with regard to the many abandoned cars found on the streets. Conveying their reactions through social media, some called it a ‘bad’ decision.
“Yes but what about all the abandoned vehicles anyway....nothing is done about those.....so what’s the point,” said a reaction on Facebook. While another said:
“Eventhough it’s a good plan to consider those vehicles as abandoned what action Baladiya had taken about the vehicles which are already abandoned?”
“They should first collect the abandoned cars, then they can act on the second-hand cars for sale,” said another in the popular Arabic site Qatarshares.
Industrial Area, Old Airport and Landmark were among the areas they noted where many of these vehicles could be found.
“Excellent decision!...There are showrooms and dedicated streets(in Industrial Area) where this should be done and not by occupying public parking places where you, I & numerous other people might need to park,” said another reaction on Facebook.tThe Peninsula
