MANILA: More than 500,000 people have expressed their intention to run in the upcoming Barangay poll on October 28, the Commission on Elections said yesterday.
In her official Twitter account, Commissioner Grace Padaca said 524,870 people have already filed their certificates of candidacy before the poll body on October 11, 12 and 14.
Of the figure, around 57,674 COCs for Barangay captain posts have been filed before the Comelec offices all over the country while a total of 467,196 COCs for Barangay councillor posts. Based on the Comelec calendar for the Barangay elections, the filing of the COCs began on October 15 and ends today.
Maguindanao fire claims three
MAGUINDANAO: Three ethnic Maguindanao villagers were killed in a fire that razed 130 houses in Taviran District in Datu Odin Sinsuat town at dawn yesterday.
The fatalities were identified as Baileng Benito, 23, and her siblings, Baikulot, 17, and Baisheka, of lower Taviran in the northwest of Datu Odin Sinsuat.
Inspector Datu Tulon Pinguiaman, chief of the Datu Odin Sinsuat police, said there were indications that an accident caused the dawn fire that razed the house of the Benitos.
Farmer killed in Arakan ambush
NORTH COTABATO: Armed men gunned down a 70-year-old farmer and wounded another in an ambush in Arakan town on Tuesday, police said.
Senior Inspector Rolly Oranza said the fatality, Rolando Sibonga, died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds. Sibonga’s companion, Jose Tatoy, 45, who was wounded in the attack, was rushed by responding barangay officials and civilian volunteers to a local hospital.
