Doha: In conjunction with Qatar Sustainability Week (QSW) 2022, Syrian Engineers Association (SEA) in Qatar organised on Wednesday a panel discussion on opportunities to achieve sustainability in facility management.

The event aimed to familiarise all engineers in Qatar, along with those working in the field of facility management, about the concept of sustainability, in both the operation and design phases of facilities management.

The panel was attended by representatives of all engineering communities in Qatar and a number of diplomats, as well as engineers working in Qatar and members of the association.

Eng. Ahmed Bana, SEA’s member and the Center of Excellence department manager at Waseef Assets Management Company, and Eng. Majd Abbar, SEA’s member and the National Technology Officer at Microsoft Qatar for the Middle East cluster, were the panellists, while Eng. Lubaba Youssef was the moderator.

Eng. Khair El Din Al Halabi, Head of Public Relations Committee, said that the panel came within the framework of the contribution of SEA in building a sustainable environment in Qatar, and in line with the effective partnership with "Earthna: Center for a Sustainable Future", and to contribute to the success of QSW 2022 in its seventh edition, about building a public awareness of the importance of the environment in Qatar, and not compromising it during the journey of urbanisation and the booming construction in modern Qatar.

Engr. Muhammad Azmie Tawackol, President of the Association, added that SEA spares no effort in all ways that would reach to public conscious of sustainability and its applications in daily life at all levels, from saving environmental resources, developing behaviours, and reducing waste in all aspects, stressing that the focus on sustainability has become a critical need  at all the engineering levels, especially after the distinctive urban renaissance that Qatar witnessed in the last two decades, and the quantity of stadiums, stations، health centres and different types of facilities that are in the process of operation.

While both panellists Eng. Ahmad and Eng. Majd spoke about the United Nations Sustainabile Development Goals (SDGs) #Envision2030  and the distinction of Qatar’s active role in this regard towards Qatar National Vision 2030 and the role of major companies contributing to reducing the carbon footprint, reducing waste and increasing the design lifetime of buildings and facilities, such as Waseef and Microsoft.

They also addressed the obstacles towards sustainable management of facilities and ways to overcome them and the role of  technology in this success.
The panel concluded with an interactive session in which the panellists answered the attendees’ questions, followed by a session of gifts distribution to the attendees who answered the panellists quizzes.
