DOHA: About 21,512 Syrian refugee families in Lebanon benefited from Qatar Red Crescent’s (QRC) urgent winter relief programme.
Represented by Qatar Development Fund, Qatar offered a grant of more than $30m of which $20m was for the refugees in Lebanon and $10m for Syrian refugees in Turkey.
QRC was assigned the task of supervising the programme and delivering the assistance to eligible beneficiaries.
Each family in Lebanon received a heater, heating oil coupons, five mattresses, five bed sheets, a hygiene kit, and a tarpaulin cover.
So far, the distribution has covered 21,512 families and QRC will continue this year to cover more families, who will receive heating oil coupons. The target is about 58,044 families.
QRC Secretary-General, Saleh bin Ali Al Mohannadi, said the programme is different from the Warm Winter campaign launched one week ago and implemented annually by QRC for poor families in various countries.
With the onset of the winter season, distribution of relief has begun across Lebanon, in cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), under an agreement signed by both sides in December 2013.
Under the deal, QRC purchases $20m worth of relief in accordance with international standards, while UNHCR distributes them to Syrian families in Lebanese districts.
