Doha: Qatar will host the two-day Arab Karate Championship on December 20 and 21, it was announced here yesterday.
Addressing a press conference here, Eid Ali Al Miraikhi, General Secretary of Qatar Karate Federation (QKF) said around ten countries have confirmed their participation in the tournament but a couple of them are likely to do so in the coming days.
“Besides hosts Qatar, the other countries taking part in the championship are Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Lebanon, UAE, Yemen and Palestine. Two more countries are likely to confirm their participation in a day or two,” Al Miraikhi said.
The QKF official said they are looking forward to some TV coverage for the event.
“We are in discussion with some of the leading television channels so that they can show some karate action on their channels. We are hopeful that the TV channels would reserve a small slot of atleast recorded action, if not live action, in their programme,” said Miraikhi.
The championship will be held for both men and women categories. The championship will be held in Kata Individual, Kata Team for men, besides Kumite weight categories of -60kg, -67kg, -75kg, -84kg and +84kg. In the women’s section, players will compete in Kata Individual, Kata Team, besides Kumite weight categories of -50kg, -55kg, -61kg, -68kg and +68kg.
Teyseer Group and Seashore Group are the two sponsors of the championship, the organisers said.
In October this year, QKF hosted the Second Qatar International Karate Championship in which around 170 players from 17 countries took part.
