DOHA: Al Wakra Hospital, formally opened in December 2012, is attracting more and more citizens and residents, with its massive infrastructure and specialised services, reveals data released by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).
Visitors to the Emergency Department at the hospital increased by 77 percent in one year while its Outpatient Department saw an increase of 48 percent between 2013 and 2014.
The hospital also reported a 77 percent increase in child births during the same period, with 3,673 in 2014 compared to 2,077 in 2013.
Visitors to the Outpatient Department increased from 80,052 in 2013 to 118,660 in 2014, up 48 percent.
The Emergency Department received 302,325 visitors in 2014 compared to 170,667 in 2013, up 77 percent.
With nearly 3,000 staff, including 217 doctors working across a wide variety of specialities, the hospital offers patients dedicated, specialised care and a full range of services, including paediatrics, dentistry, dermatology, burns, diabetes and surgery.
“The local community has benefitted greatly since the opening of the hospital as they are able to access a full range of secondary and tertiary healthcare services close to home and no longer need to travel to Doha for much of their hospital care,” said Wilson Ross, Acting CEO of the hospital.
Dr Mahmoud Al Heidous, Acting Medical Director of the hospital, said: “We have seen extensive growth across many areas, including an increase in the number of patients we care for and an expansion of the range of services we offer. Several key services have also been established at the hospital, including HMC’s Burns Unit and a new National Diabetes Centre.”
The Burns Unit previously at Rumailah Hospital was relocated to a state-of-the-art facility at Al Wakra Hospital in February 2014.
Patients benefit by having access to a modern, purpose-built facility with increased bed capacity, trained burns experts and other specialist services at the hospital.
Diabetic patients can receive the care they need closer to home thanks to the opening of the National Diabetes Centre in October 2014.
The centre on the ground floor of the Outpatient Department provides access to specialised care in one location.
About 800 patient visits per month are expected at the facility modelled on the National Diabetes Centre at Hamad General Hospital, which opened last March.
In May 2014, Al Wakra Hospital achieved accreditation from Joint Commission International (JCI), which recognises high-quality healthcare organisations around the world.
The achievement means all HMC hospitals, Ambulance Service and Home Healthcare Service have been accredited by JCI.
