ISLAMABAD: With the exit of the government, Pakistan’s eighteen ambassadors/high commissioners including high commissioner to the United Kingdom, India, Sri Lanka, Brunei and ambassadors to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), United Nations (UN), Oman and Mexico have resigned as they were either contractual and non-career diplomats.
Diplomatic sources said yesterday that High Commissioner in the UK, Wajid Shamsul Hasan; India, Salman Bashir; Brunei, Major General Ejaz Hussain; Sri Lanka, Major General Qasim Qureshi; Ambassador to UAE Jamil Ahmad Khan (former police officer); UN Ambassador Masood Khan; Oman, Nawabzada Aminullah Khan Raisani, and Mexico, Lieutenant General Masood Aslam and 10 others have resigned according to their terms of conditions of appointment.
Foreign Secretary Syed Jalil Abbas Jailani will submit comprehensive report to the caretaker administration in a couple of days for the next orders regarding their future. In the meanwhile the ambassadors who have been deemed to resign are likely to get fresh instructions from the headquarters next week, the sources said.
Ambassador to the United States Sherry Rehman who has already returned Pakistan wouldn’t proceed to Washington in the immediate future since she has planned to work for her erstwhile party.
Sherry was close friend of late Benazir Bhutto. Benazir Bhutto was taken to the hospital after fatal attack in Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007 in the car of Sherry. Sherry Rehman was with Bhutto till her last breath.
Sherry Rehman has planned to work for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) election campaign. The resigned envoys in the UK, UAE and Oman are very close to the Presidency.
The sources said that the most of the political parties opposed to the PPP demand that the ambassadors posted on account of political consideration should be withdrawn immediately.
