NEW YORK: Fashion designer L’Wren Scott, the girlfriend of Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger, was found dead in her New York apartment yesterday from an apparent suicide, according to a law enforcement official. Scott, 47, a former model whose timeless style, modern, classic and sexy fashions were favorites among A-List Hollywood stars such as Nicole Kidman, was found hanging from a scarf in her apartment in the morning. Police confirmed that a female was found “unconscious and unresponsive” in an apartment building on 11th Avenue in Manhattan. A spokesperson for Jagger said he is “completely shocked and devastated” by the news. The pair have been dating for several years. Scott, who was raised in Utah, started her career as a fashion model in Paris before becoming a designer. Last year, she announced a deal to design a small collection for Banana Republic stores.
Pistorius ‘knew SA gun safety rules’
PRETORIA: Double-amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius, on trial for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, was aware of South African firearms and self-defence laws that say you cannot shoot at an intruder unless your life is in danger, a court heard yesterday. Testifying on day 11 of the trial, firearms instructor Sean Rens read out a gun licence test passed by the track athlete, who shot dead Steenkamp through a locked toilet door at his Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day last year. One of the questions asked whether a home-owner was allowed to open fire on burglars on the other side of a security gate. Pistorius answered: “No”, Rens, who taught Pistorius gun safety and sold him weapons, told the court. Asked in the test about the legal basis for using lethal force, Pistorius answered: “The attack must be against you, a person and be unlawful.” In answer to another scenario, Pistorius replied: “No, life is not in danger.”
Unrest continues in Venezuela
CARACAS: Venezuela’s authorities deployed hundreds of security forces, including troops in combat gear, into an opposition stronghold early yesterday to stamp out protests against the leftist government of President Nicolas Maduro. The show of force came as the death toll from a month and a half of protests rose to 29, after a National Guard captain shot one day earlier during a protest in the city of Maracay died. Government forces quickly established control after moving into the area around the Plaza Altamira, a focal point of nightly clashes in eastern Caracas between masked protesters and security forces.
