DOHA: The Definitely Able Conference and Ilham Art Exhibition open today at Museum of Islamic Art (MIA).
Organised by Sasol and British Council, in partnership with Qatar Museums, the events bring international and local experts and artists together to discuss ways of increasing inclusion of people of all abilities.
“The first day of the conference will start with a discussion on legislation and how policy can help ensure opportunities and rights for all. Qatar has demonstrated leadership in eAccessibility policy, and discussion during the first session will explore other avenues to move towards inclusion via international best practice,” said Marjo Louw, President, Sasol Qatar.
Members of the public are welcome to the exhibition open during MIA hours from today until March 27.
“In the exhibition, the public will find an engaging presentation of new works by local and UK artists, inspired by MIA collection.
“Through their eyes, it is possible to get a new perspective on being disabled, but also to see what is achievable when given opportunity and a platform to excel,” said Martin Hope, Director, British Council Qatar.
Minister of Labour and Social Affairs H E Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi will deliver the opening speech while Lord Holmes of Richmond, Paralympic Champion, will give the keynote speech.
This will be followed by sessions on disability legislation, employability, inclusive learning technologies and attitudes and disability terminology.
The conference continues tomorrow with sessions on access to education, art as a vehicle to change perceptions, accessible museums and galleries and accessibility in Doha.
