DOHA: Inundated with complaints from people, the Central Municipal Council (CMC) has taken objections to what it says are dirty advertisements in lingerie shops.
The advertisements sometimes show photographs of young women wearing only the undergarments.
After a heated debate in the CMC, furious members insisted that the House make strong recommendations to the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning to invoke an existing law to curb indecent displays of advertisements in lingerie shops.
The CMC has, thus, urged the civic ministry to frame executive regulations for a law that was enforced last year (Law Number 1 of 2012) so the “indecent” advertisements could be curbed.
These advertisements are displayed on the exteriors of the main doors of lingerie shops facing the road so passersby, including women and children, also view them.
Such advertisements are against Qatar’s culture and traditions and Islam, the CMC noted in its recommendations.
The Council has also urged the state-backed consumer rights watchdog, the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Business and Trade to intervene.
The Council has said more municipal inspectors be recruited to monitor such shops.
The CMC has also said that women buying lingerie find it quite embarrassing when they confront salesmen at these shops. Such shops must have women sales personnel.
