Vice president’s wealth soars

MANILA: Vice President Jejomar Binay became richer by almost P2m in 2012, as shown in his latest statement of assets, liabilities and net worth submitted to the Office of the Ombudsman recently.

The increase in his wealth is reflected mostly in the amount of cash he has on hand and in banks, which went up from P21.3m in 2011 to P22.5m last year. Binay’s receivables also increased from P3m to P6m along with the value of his vehicles: A Ford Club Wagon and a Toyota Land Cruiser that went up by P600,000.

The second highest executive official of the country said his personal and other assets are now valued at P66.4m while his  properties are worth P13.8m.

94 held for     buying votes

MANILA: Ninety-four people have been arrested for allegedly buying votes since the start of the election period in January.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that the number arrested, 83 had been charged while 11 were still being investigated. A total of P1.164m was seized from the suspects, with P1.163 m confiscated from those facing charges, the PNP said. The data covered the start of the gun ban from January 13 to May 13. The region with the most number of vote-buying incidents was Calabarzon with 10, followed by Zamboanga with eight, and Ilocos region with seven.

Policeman   electrocuted

BATANGAS CITY: A 32-year-old policeman died when he was electrocuted at Camp Jose Razon in Nasugbu, Batangas, police said.

Superintendent Jeremias Aglugub, Nasugbu  police chief, identified the victim as Police Officer 2 Carlo Bryan Laid.

Aglugub said Laid was preparing a Power Point presentation when a power failure hit the camp in Barangay (village) Bilaran at around 9.30pm.

Laid went to the guardhouse to check the reason for the brownout when a live electrical line fell on him.

Leftist rebel killed in clash

MANILA:  A member of the leftist rebel group New People’s Army (NPA) was killed following a brief firefight with soldiers in Surigao del Norte yesterday, a military official said.

Major Leo Bongosia, spokesman of the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division, said the soldiers were conducting pursuit operations when they encountered the NPAs at Cabugo village, Claver town at around 2pm. Bongosia said the military launched pursuit operations after troops from the 30th Infantry Batallion clashed with 15 NPAs also in Claver town yesterday. A soldier died following a brief encounter between the NPAs and government forces.

AGENCIES
