Doha, Qatar: Qatar will take part in the seventy-ninth session of the World Health Assembly, to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 18 to 23, as well as in a number of related meetings and side events.

Minister of Public Health H E Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud will lead Qatar’s delegation to the meetings.

Qatar will also host a side event during the World Health Assembly titled “Healthy Longevity as a Life-Course Investment Strategy: Integrating Prevention, Primary Care, Productivity and Digital Innovation”.

The event will take place on May 19, with broad participation from countries and international organisations.

This year’s World Health Assembly is convened under the theme “Reshaping Global Health: A Shared Responsibility.” Discussions will address several key issues, including follow-up to the Political Declaration of the High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases, Universal Health Coverage, and the updated draft Global Action Plan on antimicrobial resistance.

The discussions will also address the health conditions in the occupied Palestinian territory, including east Jerusalem, and in the occupied Syrian Golan.

The agenda will cover key issues such as preparedness and response to public health emergencies, the World Health Organisation’s activities in this field, the strengthening of rehabilitation within health systems, and broader matters of health and well-being.”

The World Health Assembly is the supreme decision-making body for WHO. It is attended by delegations from all Member States. Its main function is to determine the policies of the Organization.

The Health Assembly appoints the Director-General, supervises the financial policies of the Organisation, and reviews and approves the Proposed programme budget.

The Qatari delegation has already participated in the meeting of the Programme, Budget and Administration Committee of the WHO Executive Board, held from May 13 to 15. It will also take part in the one-hundred-and-fifty-seventh session of the Executive Board on May 25 and 26 in Geneva.

The Executive Board’s primary role is to implement the policies and decisions of the World Health Assembly, provide advice, and facilitate its work.
