DOHA: The number of new Qatari students opting to attend US universities increased by 30 percent over last year, said the US embassy yesterday.
Over 1,000 Qataris are studying in the US and 80 percent of them are undergraduates, the mission said in a statement.
The US boasts over 4,000 accredited institutions of higher learning, including community colleges and English language programmes.
On Monday, the embassy helped launch the 2013-2014 academic year by participating in the US Educational Group’s Fall 2013 US University Road Show.
The embassy’s Public Affairs Officer Julie Eadeh opened the fair at the Sheraton Hotel, attended by over 200 students.
“Americans and Qataris share the core belief that education is the key to building an innovative, prosperous and knowledge-driven society,” Eadeh told the attendees.
“The embassy is ready and willing to help students from Qatar find the American university that is the best match for them.”
Representatives from over 24 US colleges and universities helped prospective students understand more about the admissions process and the academic programmes their schools offer.
Students met one-on-one with admission officials and alumni to have their questions answered and took home informational booklets and pamphlets.
The embassy’s education advising staff greeted students at their booth. They offered students information about the student visa application process and advice on how students from Qatar should prepare their applications to American universities.
