DOHA: Yet another case of the deadly coronavirus — Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) — has been reported in Qatar, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the country to six.

A 61-year-old Qatari, who suffered from flu, has tested positive for the virus, the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) said yesterday.

Of the five citizens infected earlier, three have died.

The new case was diagnosed at the National Influenza Center at Hamad Medical Corporation.

The patient had been suffering from some chronic diseases, before he was infected with MERS, the SCH said in a statement.

“The patient is under treatment and his condition is stable,” it added.

Investigations showed that he had not travelled out of the country during the two weeks prior to the onset of MERS symptoms.

He had also not come in contact with another confirmed MERS case, said the SCH.

Medical check-ups were conducted on all of his family members and others associated with him and initial results were negative, the SCH added.
