Doha: Qatar National Library (QNL) and Qatar Science Centre invited six schools from around Qatar, including Doha College, to devise a solution to a real-life scenario encountered by the library staff, in a competitive framework.

The “Solutionists Challenge” was posed to students, with the aim of giving staff a workable, easy method of transporting books to a library level not serviced by an elevator.

Participants researched the issue in great detail, generated and dissected a wide range of solutions, and then chose several to model and test. Eventually, this led to full-scale cardboard models, which students showcased to a panel of engineers, architects, designers and library staff.

The three teams that went through to the final further developed their design, and manufactured a prototype in the workshop, using the equipment and the tools themselves. The students demonstrated to the library staff the capabilities of their products, which were then scrutinised by engineers again.

The awards ceremony took place at QNL, with Qatar Academy of Science and Technology coming in third place, the American School of Doha in second and Doha College in first place. All participating schools had inspiring designs.

Doha College students, Salil Joshi, Krishna Bhatia (Year 10), Jacobo Aguilar Torralba, Sebastian Inestroza Turcios, Robin Bloemers, Karina Zamora (Year 12) all take Design and Technology for IGCSE and A Level respectively.
