DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has begun a training workshop on Shelter and Settlements in Emergencies as part of a postgraduate professional course.
The workshop at QRC’s headquarters is organised in collaboration with International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and Red Crescent Societies and the Permanent Emergency Committee.
This year, 18 trainees from Qatar, the UK, Italy, the US, the Philippines, Pakistan, Spain, France, Switzerland, Nigeria and Australia represent their Red Cross Red Crescent societies with participation of four IFRC trainers.
Staff Major General Saad bin Jassim Al Khulaifi, Director-General, Public Security, and Chairman of the committee, inaugurated the workshop in the presence of Brig. Hamad Al Dohaimi, Secretary of the committee; Muhammad Johar Al Johar, Board Member, QRC; and Marta Peٌa, Senior Officer, Shelter and Settlement Department, IFRC. “We know the important role of entities involved in emergency management and the responsibility they assume. This mandates necessary support to make them achieve their tasks to the fullest,” Brig. Hamad Al Dohaimi said.
Peٌa said: “The event is a learning opportunity to create capacities within the movement to provide more consistent and technical expertise to the shelter sector through the course. We also collaborate with other academic institutions to develop similar courses in different universities.”
The workshop is in continuation of a five-week online training followed by a six day face-to-face held this year at QRC headquarters. The affordable postgraduate professional course in Shelter and Settlements in Emergencies (Natural Disasters) is offered by IFRC in partnership with Centre for Development and Emergency Practice at Oxford Brooks University. The course faculty comprises experts, presenting insight into the course content and providing students with case studies drawn from major humanitarian emergencies. The course is accredited by Oxford Brooks University. The Peninsula
