CAIRO: Egypt's prosecutor general Talaat Ibrahim submitted his resignation earlier on Monday evening, less than a month after he was swiftly sworn in by the president.
Counsellor Adel Al-Saeed, the Assistant Attorney General, showed the text of the resignation written by Chancellor Ibrahim, and signed by him, to the prosecutors general who are sitting in ,in front of his (Ibrahim) office.
Hundreds of the prosecutors general, staged a sit-in outside Abdullah's office in Cairo Monday, demanding he resign. They said that the president's appointment of Abdullah was improper. They said the Supreme Judicial Council should have been the one to nominate him, in order to ensure a separation of powers.
If his resignation is accepted, it will be a blow to Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who has been engaged in a power struggle with the judiciary since late last month. It's part of the political turmoil that has been sweeping Egypt.
Egypt's official MENA news agency carried excerpts of the resignation letter submitted by Talaat Abdullah on Monday.
In a related development, Councellor Shadi Khalifa , the deputy of the prosecutor general said councellor Ibrahim will submit his resignation to President Morsi next Sunday , after the expiry of the referendum on the draft constitution. "The name of the new prosecutor general will be nominated next week, said Shadi Khalifa. (QNA)
