CAIRO: Egypt’s military has killed a jihadist suspected of involvement in an ambush that left 16 Egyptian soldiers killed near the border with Israel last year, an army spokesman said yesterday. Silmi Mohammed Masbah was killed on Monday in Sinai and was allegedly a member of Ansar Beit Al Maqdis — an Al Qaeda-inspired militant group operating in the restive peninsula — said Colonel Ahmed Ali on his official Facebook page.
Egyptian troops “eliminated Silmi Mohammed Masbah who is known as Abu Khalid, a member of radical Islamist movement Ansar Beit Al Maqdis,” Ali said.
He said 20 other jihadists were also arrested in the operation that killed Masbah, but they were involved in other attacks on security forces.AFP
