DOHA: Qatar University’s Department of Humanities at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) will hold an international conference on ‘Interdisciplinarity in History: An Old Method in New World Context’ – the first of its kind in Qatar and the region.
The conference on March 5 and March 6 will facilitate scientific collaboration and methodological pluralism between and across disciplines of the humanities and social sciences.
Historians and scholars from fifteen countries, prestigious academic institutions and civil society organizations will present their work, exchange ideas and discuss issues on changing and understanding of historiography in modernity and post-modernity; challenges and opportunities for the status of history in modern and contemporary academia; and the relationship between history, social sciences, humanities, and applied sciences.
Discussions and ideas will also be generated on problems in the periodization of world history; continuity and change in the writing of contemporary Arab history; and pedagogical methodologies in history.
Head of the department and associate professor in contemporary history of the Middle East Dr Mahjoob Zweiri commented that the attendance of such distinguished participants confirms Qatar University’s role as a leading global institution of higher education, and a seat of successful and innovative international scientific initiatives.
He noted that collaboration and outreach across various sectors of society are central to the vision of the conference as between academic disciplines, and expressed his gratitude to the local civil society institutions who will attend, and specifically for the valuable support of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies.
He added: “We hope that this conference will be a successful model in establishing meaningful scientific interaction between the humanities and social sciences that advances the vision and mission of Qatar University, and that will help researchers and history students write the history of Qatar and the Arabian Gulf from a coherent methodological approach based on investigation and critical analysis.
