JOHANNESBURG: South African police said 13 people were wounded in gunfire and machete attacks at an Anglo American Platinum mine yesterday, after security guards battled to disperse a 1,000-strong mob that besieged a rival union’s office. The skirmishes broke out in the tinderbox northwest platinum belt, where labour violence killed more than 50 people last year. The violence at the mine was sparked by the return of four shop stewards from the National Union of Mineworkers. AFP
