DOHA: The public representative body, the Central Municipal Council (CMC), is open to the idea of having a woman as secretary-general, and says the post is to be filled by seeking a vote on short-listed candidates in the council.
The CMC will soon set up a committee which will receive applications from prospective candidates for the post, which is administrative, and short-listed candidates who fulfil the criteria.
The post fell vacant after the incumbent secretary-general was removed about a fortnight ago.
CMC Chairman, Saud Al Hanzab (pictured), said that he, his deputy (the vice-chairman) and three members of the council will be sitting on the selection committee.
“The committee will be framing necessary requirements for the post so we pick the right candidate,” he said.
The vacancy will then be advertised in local newspapers and applications will be received from next month.
Regarding the basic requirements for the job, Al Hanzab said the candidate should be a Qatari citizen with good character and behaviour and must be a graduate with 10 to 15 years of experience working in a finance and administration department. The candidate should be fluent in English (written and spoken) and must have good computer skills.
Applications will be scrutinised and suitable candidates will be short-listed.
The candidate for the post will be decided by the CMC members through a secret ballot during an official session of the council, said the chairman.
He said Qatari women can also apply. “I believe Qatari women have the ability to work as secretary-general of the CMC.”
