MoI forum discusses women’s role

DOHA: A seminar for the women staff of the Ministry of Interior on “developing a culture of dialogue to promote human rights” marked the second day of the Arab Human Rights Day events at the Crowne Plaza hotel.

The activities are organised by the Human Rights Department of the ministry.

In her introductory address, Sheikha Amal bint Jassim Al Thani, member of the Committee for Women’s Affairs and head of the Social Initiatives Team at Human Rights Department of the Ministry of Interior, highlighted the influential role being played by the Qatari women in various sectors.

“Qatari woman has an influential presence in the fields of education, health, culture, business and charity work and she occupies leadership positions at government level and within civil society institutions,” Sheikha Amal said. 

She added that Qatar has made many steps to protect women and children through legislations and establishment of bodies such as the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, Qatar Foundation for Child and Women Protection, Family Counselling Centre and Doha International Institute for Family Studies at Qatar Foundation.

Dr Siham Farooq, education officer at Human Rights Department of Arab League gave a lecture on ‘dialogue and tolerance to protect human rights’.  

She said that Arab League adopted this theme as it sees an urgent need for promotion and protection of human rights in the Arab world. 

She  added that four factors have great role to play in promoting human rights. They are social and educational environment that are embodied in the family and the school, state and its various institutions, national institutions on human rights and the civil society.

Dr Asma Abdullah Al Atiyya, head of psychology section at faculty of education at Qatar University, presented a paper on ‘dialogue, psychological gateway and human rights’ while Dr Hayat Marafiya, Director of Qatar Debates Centre spoke on the role of the centre in developing a culture of dialogue and debate in educational institutions.
