Obama nominates Tom Perez as Secretary of Labour

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama yesterday nominated Tom Perez, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, as labour secretary, a cabinet member who will play a key role in the administration’s efforts to raise the minimum wage and reform immigration laws. Perez is the only Latino nominated to Obama’s second-term Cabinet so far. The Harvard-educated civil rights attorney is expected to face opposition from some Republican senators.
Explosive devices found at university
MIAMI: Police found explosive devices and weapons in a Florida university dormitory room early yesterday after a man was killed by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounded, the university said. Hundreds of students were evacuated from the Florida Central University, which was closed down after the discovery, the university in Orlando, Florida said.
UK police investigate Hockney aide’s death
LONDON: A young man who was at the home of world-renowned British artist David Hockney has died in mysterious circumstances, police said yesterday. Officers are investigating events leading up to the death of the 23-year-old Dominic Elliott, an assistant and close friend of the painter, over the weekend. The man was taken to hospital from Hockney’s home in Bridlington, northeast England.  It is unclear whether he died in hospital or at the artist’s place. Agencies
