DOHA: Sixty photos of the historic voyage of the Qatari dhow Fath Al Kheir are displayed at an exhibition which opened yesterday at Katara Esplanade.
The photos were taken by Qatari artist Ahmed bin Yousef Al Khulaifi, Chairman of the board of directors of Qatar Photographic Society, during the 27-day journey of the dhow around the GCC states.
The Fath Al Kheir journey was the first of its kind, initiated by Katara to revive the centuries-old maritime heritage Qatar shares with neighbouring countries.
The 45-metre long dhow, carrying 44 crew, sailed across the six GCC states from November 22 to December 18 last year as a highlight of Katara’s annual Traditional Dhow Festival.
It completed 850 nautical miles trip from Qatar to Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, the UAE and back to Qatar.
Katara General Manager, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti and the artist, along with other officials, opened the expo.
Dr Al Sulaiti said the Fath Al Kheir journey was part of Katara’s strategy to revive and maintain Qatari traditions and culture and transmit them from one generation to another.
The expo is open to the public until April 3.
