Qatar University College of Law (LAWC) team won the Arabic Moot Court Competition among eight teams from eight universities from the Gulf and Middle East, beating Sultan Qaboos University in the finals.
The teams from QU, University of Jordan, Kuwait University, Saint Joseph University, Tunis University, Birzeit University, Ain Shams University presented arguments on a criminal legal dispute in the competition held on March 10-13 that followed the 4th Annual Middle East Vis International Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot competition hosted at QU on March 2-6.
“This is indeed a phenomenal achievement which comes as a result of the dedication and hard work of the students,  as well as their coaches and every LAWC professor in honing our students lawyering and advocacy skills that they put to effective use in the competition,” LAWC Dean Dr Hassan Okour said.
“We’ve launched a new course on Moot Court offered by the Legal Writing and Advocacy Skills Program to equip students with the skills to prepare written briefs and present oral arguments which are critical in legal and advocacy settings.  I believe these results are the fruit of our emphasis on critical thinking, legal writing and advocacy skills,” he added.
In the Vis International Commercial Arbitration pre-moot held earlier, LAWC students won writing awards for “Best Memorial – Claimant” and “Best Memorial – Respondent” over 20 students from seven law schools from the Gulf and Middle East region.
Participating teams included Kabul University, Dar Al Hekma College, Alexandria University, Kuwait International Law School, Al Iraqiya University, and University of Legal, Political, and Social Sciences, Tunis.
The writing category was conducted in the lead up to the start of the pre-moot on March 2. All participating teams submitted two written memorials, one each in support of the two parties that were part of the competition’s fictitious legal dispute involving a breach of contract for a medical treatment facility. In the oral argument category, LAWC team excelled in the four preliminary rounds to advance to the semi-final where they conceded to Al Iraqiya University team.  Alexandria University team was crowned the overall champions.
Dr Okour said:  “Our students continue to excel in these competitions and the College ensures that they are given the tools and resources to succeed.  We are proud of their accomplishments in both events”.
